Chester Burton “Chet” Atkins (June 20, 1924 – June 30, 2001) was an American guitarist, occasional vocalist, and record producer who, with Owen Bradley, pioneered the smoother country music style known as the Nashville sound, which broadened the appeal of country music to include adult pop music fans as well. Atkins was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and died in Nashville, Tennessee. Merle Travis’ distinctive plucking technique served as an inspiration for Atkins. Django Reinhardt, George Barnes, Les Paul, and subsequently Jerry Reed were all significant influences on the guitarist’s style. His distinctive picking technique and musicianship won him fans both inside and outside of the country music industry, both in the United States and abroad, and he became a household name.

As a record producer, Atkins worked with a variety of artists including The Browns (Hank Snow), Porter Wagoner (Norma Jean), Dolly Parton (Dottie West), Perry Como (Elvis Presley), The Everly Brothers (Eddy Arnold), Jim Reeves (Jerry Reed), Skeeter Davis (Waylon Jennings), and Norma Jean (Norma Jean). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, among other honours. Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards, as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards.
