Chester Trent Lott, Sr. (born October 9, 1941) is a former United States Senator from Mississippi who held a number of leadership roles in both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate during his tenure in office. He was elected to Congress as one of the first members in a surge of Republicans who won seats in traditionally Democratic southern states before the mid-2000s. He rose to the position of Senate Majority Leader, but was forced to resign after supporting Strom Thurmond’s segregationist Dixiecrat presidential campaign in 194Representative William M. Colmer of Mississippi, who was also the chairman of the House Rules Committee, hired Lott as his administrative assistant in 1968, and he served in that position until his resignation. Following Colmer’s retirement, Lott was elected to fill Colmer’s old House of Representatives seat.
In 1988, Lott was elected to the United States Senate, replacing another retiree, John Stennis, who had stepped down. Following the Republican takeover of the Senate in 1995, Lott rose to the position of Senate Majority Whip, and then Senate Majority Leader in 1996, following the resignation of presidential candidate Bob Dole, who was from Kansas. Lott resigned from his position as Senate Minority Leader on December 20, 2002, after widespread controversy over remarks he made against Strom Thurmond’s presidential campaign. He retired from the Senate in 2007, and Republican Roger Wicker was elected to fill his vacancy in a special election held in 200Lott went into lobbying and was a founding member of the Breaux-Lott Leadership Group. Later, the firm was purchased by the legal and lobbying firm Patton Boggs & Rees.
